Touching Tomorrow: Cashless Payment and OCTO Vending

With the increasing Covid cases these past two years, everyone become sensitive when it comes to touching foreign things. For a start, when we go outside, we probably used to be mindlessly touching things here and there like door handles, handrails, or even, well, cash for making payments. Before March 2020, we never questioned where the banknotes that sit in your wallet actually came from. These days, the more you go outside, the more you find that having your smartphone with you is more than enough to make your purchases. For online stores, it makes sense that you won't be needing physical form of payment. Offline stores, on the other hand, now have multiple devices installed on every cashiers to make payments. It is way more convenient regarding the safety measures we take when we go outside.

Then came the reign of QR codes. You can easily point out these codes everywhere. You see them whenever you check-in and check-out from places you go, to get your menu book, or when you have your takeaway orders.

What does QR codes do actually? Why can we make payment using them?

Shorts for quick response code, a QR code works like a normal barcode does. Instead of vertical lines you see on barcodes, they use matrix to contain all the data, the location, the link, everything you want to put in the code. They mostly have these small squares that build the matrices, ranging from 33 x 33 to 177 x 177 squares and the more complex these small squares are, then the bigger the data they can contain. If you want to know where they originally came from for scientific reasons, they’re first introduced in Japan (we’re not lying, it’s on Wikipedia). Conveniently, it is readable by most smartphone cameras, and probably one of the main reasons why you see QR codes everywhere now, apart from how brilliant it is for advertisers. There are also websites you can go to create your own QR codes (personalised down to the colour instead of the normal black), where you just type in your link and voila, they generate the unique matrix just for you. For example, you can try to scan the QR code down below.

Almost forgot we sell vending machines for a hot second here. *nervous laughs*

Once upon a time in the 21st century, vending machines are much smarter that they can make payment without you inserting cash or swiping your plastic cards. No magic tricks, just QR codes. During the pandemic, you might want to sanitize everything you touch, but it is just a peculiar idea to sanitize your money, right? By placing QR codes on vending machines, making payments are fortunately, much easier to do. You get the right amount down to the last digit, you don’t have to worry about the stuck cash, and you don’t have to be thatperson who sanitize your cash.

The future is red with CIMB Niaga OCTO Vending

Probably red is associated with Taylor Swift, but for us, it’s the step CIMB Niaga took by providing OCTO Vending. Last year they came up with smart vending machines that sell healthcare products placed in public places. During the pandemic, Covid-related products are very much needed in our life. Masks, hand sanitizers and disinfectants are sold in these red vending machines, which are quite useful when you're around public places and cannot find the closest shop if, for an example, you run out of masks. OCTO Vending also works seamlessly with their own banking app: OCTO Mobile (they do love everything eight, don’t they?). The QR code on the OCTO Vending can be scanned directly on the banking app, it verifies the payment automatically and you have your products right away. They sometimes also offer discounts whenever you use the app for paying on these OCTO Vending, so it’s a win-win.

Last week, OCTO Vending made it appearance with CIMB Niaga in INABicycle Show 2022 (IBS) x Fitamin at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) Senayan, on 3-6 February 2022. The vending machine was strategically put in the middle of the exhibition and conveniently sold drinks as the access to go outside was quite a walk. This OCTO Vending itself was very hard to miss because it had the colour red with the gigantic-eyed octopus on it (they really do love eights).

Previously, CIMB Niaga partnered with Smartven exclusively for OCTO Vending. On that note, you can make your own OCTO Vending through us, without needing to rent the machine privately. It is an opportunity for you to open a small business with the advantage of connected to OCTO Mobile from CIMB Niaga.
